Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such medications must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you become ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
