The artist has handed over the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize prize money to the trust for venues, which operates to save the UK's grassroots music venues.

Fender was presented with the prize on October 16 as his new release People Watching was chosen as the top album of the past year.

The musician has chosen to give the cash to the trust, in recognition of the crucial part grassroots venues played in his initial steps.

"I wouldn't be doing my current career if it hadn't been for all the performances I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was starting out," stated the artist. "These spaces are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, over 150 of these venues have ceased operations – approximately 16% of the total UK scene.

Recently, well-known musicians like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by adding a small levy to their ticket costs, which benefits independent venues.

Sam Fender also participated, collecting over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to help thirty-eight local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds assisted spaces that were facing imminent closure due to issues stemming from flooding, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Some locations obtained financial assistance in upgrading facilities and gear that helped performers and audiences.

"The idea that money from shows in large arenas backs the local stages, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just logical," the star has commented.

The musician is far from the only musician to donate his Mercury Prize funds to good deeds.

When they earned the prize in the year 1996 for their album the album, lead singer Cocker declared that the act would donate their prize money to the charity War Child.

That year, artist the artist divided her award among multiple organizations, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also contributed a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked updated gear," Ms Dynamite told outlets.

Previously, they contributed their winnings to the community center that supported their act, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

Also 1994 winners they gave their prize to a MS organization after a acquaintance was identified with the illness.

"The victory was sufficient," stated vocalist Heather Small. "The cash was the extra but we could do without the extra, because we had the cake. So our success affected the lives of others."

Last week, the trust announced it had rescued a couple of local spots in that region, by transferring them to local control.

The first in the city and The Croft in the city were acquired under the public acquisition scheme, which is supported by a national body and supporters who buy "ownership units" in the venues.
