Senate Passes Measure to Release Jeffrey Epstein Records

The Senate on this Tuesday gave swift approval to a bill that will require the publication of investigative files concerning the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the House of Representatives and a reversal by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. Trump's team relented after months of trying to block the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has dogged the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Both Chambers

The Senate acted by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a individual voting process, speeding up the process. Hours earlier, the House voted decisively for the bill on a massive majority.

The public have endured sufficient delay. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer stated in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to pass it unanimously. “Uncover the facts. Ensure full disclosure.”

Future Action

This legislation next goes to Donald Trump for his endorsement. The president signaled on the previous day that he would approve the bill.

Although Trump has for months dismissed the outcry over the authorities' approach of the scandal as a “false narrative”, he expressed his backing for the House bill over the weekend, and announced he would sign the measure if it comes to him.

Reaction

The Democratic party, along with victims and their supporters who were seated in a public section, applauded after the bill was passed. The sole “no” vote came from a Louisiana Republican, who expressed concern he worried the measure would reveal specific data of witnesses, potential suspects and others caught up in the investigation.
