Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille in a Shootout to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now secured the season-opening cup on fourteen different times.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the showdown between the French league champions and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille fired twice in the closing moments to seize a surprise lead. First, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial leveler in the dying seconds to force the contest into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and Desire Doue all scored successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 4-1 penalty win.

The record champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the last 13 seasons.
